Grant Wallace
The Market Barber

My grandfather was a barber. I didn’t get to know him that well because I was very young. One of my earliest memories as a kid is of sitting in his barber shop with my gran and my mum and watching him shave. Just the smell. I associate the smell of barber shops with my grandad. Yes, I wanted to get trained up to do it. To understand my grandad more. Obviously hair styles change, but a shave is a shave. We still use a cut throat razor today. So nothing really changes. I went to do hairdressing and as soon as I was 16 I got a job in a salon and I was trained up… Anyone who dares to can cut my hair! When we get new staff in, obviously you have to sit down and talk to the person. But if you’re coming to work in a barber, the question is: can you cut hair? I get them to cut my hair and show me. It’s not nice for them to be in that situation but they’ve got to do it. We do take into consideration that they might be a bit nervous, but I’ve been doing it so long that I can tell, as soon as they pick up a pair of scissors, whether they’re going to be any good or not…
