Oxford’s Covered Market has been around for over two centuries and as you would expect has a long, varied and interesting heritage. As well as a building dating back to the 1770s, there is a rich tapestry of experience and expertise that has shaped this unique trading environment. The majority of businesses are independent and owner-managed. Some of them date back to the original opening or are related in some way to the family names that have stood the test of time.
Heritage Lottery funding has enabled us to bring together archive material and new living histories to document the personality of the Market. We have also been able to bring you access to previously restricted documents courtesy of the Oxfordshire Archives and Newsquest Oxfordshire.
We are not looking to present an exclusive academic website but to make some of our heritage accessible to a wide range of people. Therefore, the descriptions are written for a wide audience that will include children. All of the documents shown can be seen in their original form at the Oxfordshire Archives. We hope that you enjoy learning about the Market.
We hope that, in turn, it will inspire you to pay us a visit and to spend some time and some money in supporting independent local businesses.
