What are Food Miles?
Food miles are a way of attempting to measure how far food has travelled before it reaches the consumer. It is a good way of looking at the environmental impact of foods and their ingredients. It includes getting foods to you, but also getting waste foods away from you, and to the landfill! Thinking about food miles helps us to think about where our food has come from, how it has been transported, and about the environmental effects this has had.
Click on the shops to see a product and the place it has come from. Using the food miles calculator, work out how many miles (and kilometres) that product has travelled to get to Oxford. Fill in your answers on the sheet.
Try to work out if that product could have been sourced more locally, in Oxford or the UK? If yes, write down where it could have come from.
